CV Lies and Fake Resumes

CV lies are apparently quite widespread. Some surveys suggest that as many as two thirds of all CVs and resumes contain CV lies because getting a new job can be highly stressful and some people feel the need to enhance their achievements and so present themselves in the most favourable, albeit dishonest, light.

In my experience as a Career Coach and Recruiter, I have seen people pushed into the deception of CV lies and fake Resumes in the mistaken belief that because everyone else seems to be doing it, it is OK.

It is not OK. You may get away with CV lies temporarily, but in a short while it becomes more than just CV lies, you end up living a lie and will probably get found out anyway. You may think it is worthwhile, as one inexperienced draughtsman told me, because you gain some extra experience before you are found out. Repeat often enough and you suddenly become qualified. I don’t think so!

Every job-seeker must face the challenge of presenting their CV with qualifications and past experience as positively as possible. But where do harmless exaggerations end and CV lies begin? It is a difficult question to answer and the best answer is to be honest at all times. If you consult a professional CV writer or career coach, you will find that their skilled use of relevant vocabulary to describe your real attributes, is far better than telling CV lies. And it’s something you CAN live with.

Before you prepare your CV you should undertake a full skills audit by considering every aspect of your job; what you actually do to complete your tasks and how you manage yourself and maybe others while you do your job.

By analysing your skills fully you equip yourself and avoid any need to tell CV lies; remember if you have done it - “it ain’t bragging”. All the better still if you can use well chosen words to clearly describe the actions and results of your involvement.

So the best advice is not to lie to future employers with the potential embarrassment of being found out. At worst, it can cost you the job. Under the terms of your contract of employment, prospective employees are required to tell the truth. Many application forms require you to sign as a testament of having told the truth.

When you submit your CV, and a job offer is made on the basis of information contained in it, which the employer believes to be correct, then the employer is legally entitled to withdraw the job offer if they discover subsequently that your CV contains false information. CV lies are just not worth it.

3 Types of Resumes That Will Land You the Job

There are three main types of resumes: chronological, functional and combination. Of these types of resumes, the chronological is the most popular.

A chronological resume lists employment history in reverse chronological order with your current or most recent job first.

When using this format, include the name and address of the company, dates of employment, job titles within the company and a description of your responsibilities in order of importance or relevance. This format is excellent for people with strong employment histories that are relevant to the targeted position.

A functional resume is used to emphasize skills and experience as opposed to employment dates, employers? names and job titles. This is an excellent format to use if you are seeking to change careers, have had gaps in employment or are not able to show a strong work history with career progression.

A combination resume has elements of both the chronological and functional resumes. It is a particularly useful format if you have a long work history and wish to only emphasize some of it or to summarize your skills and experience under functional headings while still providing basic details of employment history.

Since chronological resumes are the easiest to write and generally preferred by employers, it is the format of choice unless:

* You have a very long or erratic employment history.

* You are seeking to return to a former career.

Eight Essential Proofreading Secrets to Keep Your Resume Out of the Trash

Do you ever wonder why you did not hear back from an employer once you applied for a position? Is it possible that in your rush to get your resume sent, you made some errors that could have been avoided if you had taken time to proofread?

I estimate eight out of every 10 resumes that are submitted to me for review contain obvious errors. From a recruiter’s standpoint, those resumes immediately end up in the “no” pile. Follow the tips below and you just may find yourself one-step closer to gaining that interview.

1. Take a break between writing and proofreading.

Give your eyes a rest and let your information sit overnight. This will give you a fresh perspective on your work.

2. Print your resume.

When you print your resume, you will be able to determine if the formatting is consistent. You can also double check for potential capitalization and punctuation errors that may be less noticeable on your monitor.

3. Proofread more than once.

Each time you proofread your resume, look for something different. For instance, the first time you look at it, search for misspelled words. For the second review, look for grammatical foul ups.

4. Proofread aloud.

By reading your resume aloud, you will slow down and be more likely to catch errors you may not see when just looking. This will also give you a better idea of how the information flows from one section to another.

5. Take it apart.

Look at each word individually and not how they combine with the others. When you look at the document as a whole, your mind will naturally focus on what you meant to say, instead of what you actually typed. To stay focused, you can use two pieces of blank paper to cover everything except for the line you are reading.

6. Read it backwards.

By reading your resume backwards, you are forced to slow down and see each word individually.

7. Get help.

Ask someone else to proofread with you. An extra pair of eyes is always helpful when you are proofreading, especially if you have been working on it for a long time.

8. Avoid distractions.

Each time your proofreading efforts are interrupted, you are more prone to skip errors. If you are an e-mail addict, take your proofreading somewhere other than your desk to help keep those computer distractions from taking over.

Proofreading is an essential skill that should be used each time you apply for a position. If you take the time to carefully proofread your resume, your resume might just end up in an employee file, instead of the deep, dark depths of the trash can.

BullsEye Resume

One size fits all resumes are a thing of the past. The marketplace requires new resume techniques and the sooner you recognize this and act on it the more your resume will help Y-O-U. The best way to build your resume is to use the bullseye technique. This means your resume will need to target the specific needs of the employer you are approaching.

Statistics tell us that a resume gets only a few seconds of time during the review process. With this in mind it is important for the top-half of your resume to be right on target with regard to the employers requirements. Think of the top-half of your resume as your billboard or advertising section. This is the section where you will want to point out your specific strengths and use bullet statements to highlight results that you have delivered during your previous employment. This is ?not’ where you put a boring objective statement of what you want to achieve. That is pass?. If you list an objective you must build it around what you will bring/deliver to the employer. Always keep in mind that when the employer is reviewing your resume they will be thinking “what’s in it for me” and not how they can make you a happy camper. So, if your objective focuses on what you want it will be a turn-off right from the start.

The top-half of your resume should also include your ?professional highlights’ or ?key achievements’. Again, when writing these make sure to highlight how you have done something the employer needs as part of the job requirement.

Using action words/phrases to begin your sentences is also critical. Just imagine how many resumes the employer gets ? literally hundreds, if not thousands. How will yours stand out from the pack and keep the ?reviewer’ from falling asleep? Action words, that’s how. Here are a couple of examples of how to start your sentences with action words that convey energy and entice the reader to continue:

? Achieved?
? Created?
? Reduced costs by?
? Delivered?
? Generated?
? Spearheaded?
? Improved?

Use this technique throughout your entire resume. Get rid of any wording that is ?job responsibility’ or ?job description’ sounding. Employers want to know about your accomplishments ? they do not want a copy of your job description! Make sure to write about your achievements with descriptive words that help the reader visualize you in the position. And take a look online for ?sample’ resumes to get a good feel for a fresh new layout. There are plenty of resume service providers that have samples listed on their websites.

Stay in sync with the marketplace ? a resume should be no more that 2 pages (unless you have patents or publications to list). Be sure to stick with communicating key information and use language that makes the reviewer want to read more about you and most of all ? get you in for the interview!

A resume represents who the applicant is in the eyes of the recruiter. This is because the one who will be reviewing the document does not know anything about the person except for the details that are written down on paper.

There are many ways to write it and this depends if the applicant is a fresh grad or an executive. 1. A career objective must be placed so that the recruiter will know what position is the individual applying for. One or two sentences will do and it has to be clear and concise.

2. The next thing, which recruiters will review very carefully, is the person?s accomplishments. It doesn?t have to be something big like saving the company from a meltdown. It should simply state the things that the executive did including one?s duties and responsibilities.

3. There are many ways to state these things. Applicants should avoid lengthy paragraphs and probably use bullet points instead to get the message across.

4. It is also not a good idea to state how much will be the desired salary for the job unless otherwise requested. It is a huge turnoff given that the person will have to get in first and prove oneself to those who are already working for the company.

4. The last thing to do is to proofread the resume. Typos and other grammatical errors must be omitted prior to submission. Once that document is sent by fax, there is no way to make any more corrections. This will be in the hands of the recruiter who has the power to keep it on file or throw it in the trash.

When everything is ready, this is the time that is sent through the fax. It will take some time before a recruiter decides to call and schedule an interview so one has to be patient.

During this time, it wouldn?t hurt to also send this to other companies because there is always room for someone qualified in the job market.

It will be a good idea to practice answering certain questions prior to the interview. Giving a one-sentence response does not do much so the applicant has to expound on giving the recruiter a chance to know more about the individual.

Fax papers don?t last that long. During the interview, bringing an original copy is best and then giving this to the interviewer.
